Face Yoga for the Neck: Firm, Tone and Undo “Tech Neck”

By Sonia Singh, certified face yoga instructor

The neck often shows age before the face does, and it’s the area people forget to look after. The good news is that the neck responds well to face yoga, partly because so much of what ages it, poor posture and neglect, is within your control.

This guide covers why the neck loses firmness, the posture habit quietly making it worse, and a routine to firm and de-tense it. No products, just your hands and a few minutes a day.

Why the neck ages faster than you’d expect

A few things stack up here:

  • A weakening platysma. The platysma is the broad, thin sheet of muscle across the front of your neck. As it loses tone, the front of the neck softens and can develop vertical bands and slackness.
  • “Tech neck.” Hours spent looking down at phones and laptops shorten the front of the neck, crease the skin and weaken those muscles over time.
  • Thin skin and sun. Neck skin is thinner than facial skin and gets far less sunscreen, so it’s prone to crepiness and sun damage.
  • Neglect. Most people’s skincare stops at the jaw. The neck gets none of the attention the face does.

What is “tech neck”?

Tech neck is the tension, lines and slackness that come from constantly tilting your head down to look at a screen. Try it in a mirror: drop your chin to your chest and watch the skin bunch at the front of the neck. Now imagine doing that for hours a day, for years. That repeated folding, plus the muscle weakening underneath, is tech neck.

Can face yoga actually firm the neck?

Honestly, yes for some things, with limits for others. Face yoga can tone the platysma and surrounding muscles, which firms and supports the front of the neck, and it releases the tension that tech neck builds. Regular practice genuinely helps here.

What it can’t do is fully reverse significant skin laxity or heavy sun-damaged crepiness on its own. Those are more about skin quality than muscle, and may need a dermatologist. So: great for tone, tension and prevention; limited for advanced sagging.

Step 1: Fix your posture

Posture is the foundation, because it removes the daily cause. Start here:

  • Roll your shoulders back and down a few times to release tension.
  • Open your chest: bring your arms back and slightly out, lift through the chest.
  • Set your head so your chin sits parallel to the floor, not dropped.
  • Through the day, lift your phone to eye level instead of bending your neck down to it.

Your neck-firming routine

Clean hands and neck, a drop of oil or serum, and keep every move gentle.

1. Posture reset (20 seconds) Shoulder rolls, then the chest opener above. Begin from tall and open.

2. Under-chin tapping (30–60 seconds) Keeping your chin parallel to the floor, tap briskly under the chin and along the front of the neck with your fingertips. Wakes up circulation and helps release fluid.

3. Downward neck stroke (30 seconds) With a feather-light touch, stroke down the sides and front of the neck toward your collarbones, then gently pulse at the collarbones. This encourages lymphatic drainage and de-puffs.

4. Platysma lift (repeat 5 times) Rest your fingers flat on your collarbones to anchor the skin. Tilt your head back gently (not far if your neck is sensitive), push your bottom lip up and out until you feel the front of the neck engage. Hold five seconds, release, repeat. This is the key move for the platysma.

5. Ceiling kiss (repeat 5 times) Sit tall, tilt your head back to look at the ceiling, and pucker your lips as if kissing it. Hold five seconds, relax, repeat. You’ll feel the front of the neck working.

6. Tongue stretch, each side (hold 15 seconds each) Turn your head to one side and peer over your shoulder. Bring your tongue out and up toward your nose to lift the jaw and lower face. Hold 15 seconds, switch sides.

7. Finish (30 seconds) Return to centre, roll the shoulders, tap gently over the neck once more, and take a few slow breaths.

Don’t forget to protect your neck

This is the tip most guides skip. Whatever you put on your face, take it down your neck too, especially sunscreen. Sun exposure is a leading cause of crepey neck skin, and the neck is the most under-protected area on the body. Toning muscle while ignoring sun protection is half a job.

How long until you see results

Expect a few weeks to feel firmer tone and less tension, and around 8 to 12 weeks of near-daily practice for a visible difference. Consistency, and fixing that posture, matter more than time spent per session.

When to see a professional

If your main concern is loose, sagging or heavily crepey neck skin rather than tone, a dermatologist can talk you through options. Face yoga still helps maintain tone alongside any treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Does face yoga tighten neck skin?

It tones the muscle underneath (the platysma), which firms and supports the front of the neck. It helps tone and tension more than significant skin laxity.

What is tech neck?

The tension, lines and slackness caused by constantly tilting your head down to look at screens. Posture correction and neck exercises help counter it.

Does face yoga help neck lines?

It can soften lines linked to muscle tension and posture. Deep, set lines respond less, and sun protection matters as much as exercise.

Does it help a crepey neck?

Crepiness is largely about skin quality and sun damage. Face yoga supports tone but won’t fully fix advanced crepey skin on its own.

How long until I see results?

A few weeks to feel a difference, roughly 8 to 12 weeks of consistent practice for visible firming.
