Two worries come up again and again: “Am I too old for this to make a difference?” and, less often, “Am I too young to bother?” Both have the same reassuring answer. You can start face yoga at any age and benefit, the benefit just looks a little different depending on where you’re starting.
Here’s the honest breakdown, decade by decade, so you can see exactly what it can do for you now.
The short answer
You can start at any age. Late 20s to early 30s is often called the ideal time to begin, because that’s when the first signs of ageing appear and prevention is easiest. But that’s the ideal window for prevention, not the only time it works. The most-cited research was done on women aged 40 to 65, who looked around three years younger after consistent practice. So if you’re in that range or beyond, the evidence is literally on your side.
Face yoga decade by decade
In your 20s Mostly about prevention and habit-building. Your skin still has plenty of collagen and elasticity, so face yoga here helps maintain tone, ease the tension that creates early expression lines, and lock in a habit that pays off for decades. Keep it gentle; you’re preserving, not fixing.
In your 30s Collagen production starts to slow and the first fine lines and subtle volume changes appear. This is a lovely time to start: enough is changing to make results noticeable, but early enough that you’re staying ahead of it. Focus on overall tone plus any area you’ve noticed shifting.
In your 40s This is the decade most face yoga research targets, and where many people begin. Cheeks may start to lose fullness, the jawline softens, and lines deepen. Face yoga here is both corrective and preventive: toning the muscles to firm and lift, while slowing what’s ahead. Expect gradual, believable improvement with consistency.
In your 50s and beyond It’s absolutely not too late, remember the study included women up to 65. At this stage face yoga leans corrective: firming tone that’s changed, boosting circulation for a brighter look, and easing tension. Pair it with good skincare and sun protection, be patient, and keep expectations realistic. Plenty of my most motivated clients started here.
Does your age change your results?
A little, and it helps to be honest about how. Starting earlier is largely preventive: you’re maintaining what you have and building the habit. Starting later is more corrective: you’re toning muscle and improving the look of changes that have already happened. Younger skin may respond a touch faster thanks to better elasticity, but every age sees benefit, which is exactly why the research focused on the 40-to-65 group.
It’s genuinely never too late
If there’s one thing to take away: there is no age at which face yoga stops being worthwhile. The muscles respond to training whether you’re 25 or 65, and the relaxation and circulation benefits are available to everyone. The best time to start was years ago; the second best time is today.
How to start at any age
The approach is the same whatever your decade: start gently, keep it short and consistent, and don’t crease the skin. New to it? Begin with my what is face yoga guide for the overview, then follow the beginner’s routine for the actual moves.
