A double chin bothers a lot of people, and face yoga can genuinely help with some of them, but not all. The honest first step isn’t an exercise. It’s working out what’s actually causing yours, because that decides whether these exercises will do much at all.
So this guide starts there. Then I’ll show you the posture fix that matters most, and a 10-minute routine to firm the area. No products to buy, just your hands.
First, what’s causing your double chin?
A double chin usually comes down to one or a mix of these:
- Posture (“tech neck”). Hours looking down at a phone or screen shorten and weaken the muscles under the chin, bunching the skin and making a double chin look worse. This is the most fixable cause, and face yoga helps a lot here.
- Age and skin elasticity. As we age we lose collagen and elastin, so the area sags. Muscle toning can improve support.
- Muscle tone. A weak platysma (the sheet of muscle over the front of the neck) lets the area soften. This responds well to exercise.
- Fat and genetics. Some double chins are mostly stored fat, often influenced by genetics and overall body weight. This is the one face yoga can’t fix on its own.
Look in the mirror, sit up tall, and gently tighten the front of your neck. If the area firms up noticeably, posture and muscle tone are likely a big part of your double chin, and this routine is for you. If it stays full regardless, fat is probably the main factor.
The honest truth: can face yoga get rid of a double chin?
Here’s the part most articles dance around. You can’t spot-reduce fat. Doing chin exercises won’t melt fat from under your chin specifically. If your double chin is mainly fat, it’ll respond to overall weight management, not facial exercises.
What face yoga can do is tone and strengthen the muscles under the chin and jaw, which lifts and firms the attached skin, and it moves lymphatic fluid to reduce puffiness in the area. So for a double chin caused by posture, weak muscle or mild sagging, it can make a real, visible difference. For one caused by fat, treat it as a helpful add-on, not the whole answer.
That honesty matters, because it means you’ll spend your ten minutes a day on the thing most likely to actually work for you.
Step 1: Fix your posture (this is the foundation)
Before any exercise, sort your posture, because it undoes half the problem on its own. Try this now: round your shoulders and drop your head to look down. See how the skin under the chin bunches? That’s the position most of us sit in all day.
The fix: feet flat, shoulders down and slightly back, chin parallel to the floor. Imagine a cord running from the base of your spine out through the top of your head, gently lifting you tall. You won’t hold it perfectly all day, and that’s fine, just return to it whenever you notice yourself slumping. Lift your phone to eye level too.
Your 10-minute double chin routine
Clean hands and face, a drop of oil or serum so your fingers glide, and stay gentle throughout.
1. Posture reset (20 seconds) Sit tall as above. Take a few breaths in this position before you begin so you’re working from a lifted, aligned starting point.
2. Chin tapping (30–60 seconds) Using the back of one hand, tap briskly under your chin, keeping your chin parallel to the floor. This wakes up circulation and helps release fluid build-up in the area.
3. Lymphatic massage (30–60 seconds) Use both thumbs to smooth along the underside of your jaw, from the chin outwards. Then, with a feather-light touch, stroke down the sides of your neck to your collarbones. This drains excess fluid that adds to puffiness.
4. Tongue-to-roof hold (repeat 20, each side) Turn your head to one side and tilt your chin up slightly. With lips closed, press your tongue to the roof of your mouth and release, about one per second, 20 times. Swap sides. You’ll feel the muscles under the chin working.
5. Jaw jut (repeat 8–10 times) Tilt your head back slightly and push your lower jaw forward until you feel a stretch under the chin. Hold three seconds, relax, repeat. This targets the platysma directly.
6. Chin tuck (repeat 10 times) Sit tall and gently draw your chin straight back toward your neck (making a deliberate “double chin”). Hold five seconds and release. This strengthens the deep neck muscles that posture weakens.
7. Finish (30 seconds) Tap gently under the chin again, roll your shoulders, and take a few slow breaths.
A realistic timeline
Everyone differs, but as a guide with near-daily practice:
- Weeks 1–2: You’ll feel the muscles working and often less neck tension.
- Weeks 4–6: Slightly firmer under the chin, reduced puffiness, a more relaxed jawline.
- 3 months: Visible improvement in definition for double chins driven by posture or muscle tone.
- 6 months: Results tend to stabilise and become your new baseline with maintenance.
What else helps
Face yoga works better alongside a few basics: stay hydrated, keep your salt intake moderate (it worsens puffiness), sleep well, and if fat is a factor, overall fitness and diet will do more for the area than any facial exercise.
When to see a professional
If your double chin is significant, mostly fat, or really bothering you, a GP or cosmetic professional can talk you through options. Face yoga can still complement whatever you choose, and it’s a good habit to keep either way.
Frequently asked questions
What causes a double chin?
Usually a mix of posture (“tech neck”), age-related loss of skin elasticity, weak neck muscle tone, and stored fat influenced by genetics and weight.
Can face yoga get rid of a double chin?
It can firm and lift a double chin caused by posture, weak muscle or mild sagging. It can’t remove one that’s mainly fat, since you can’t spot-reduce fat.
Does posture really cause a double chin?
Yes. Looking down for long periods weakens the muscles under the chin and bunches the skin, making a double chin more pronounced over time.
Can you spot-reduce chin fat with exercise?
No. Facial exercises tone muscle but don’t burn fat from one specific area. Fat loss happens across the whole body with overall lifestyle changes.
How long until I see results?
Most people feel a difference within a couple of weeks, with visible firming around 4 to 6 weeks and clearer changes by 3 months of near-daily practice.
